Philology in an Old Key
Lord Shang RevisitedThis was the opening lecture at the WSWG 17 meeting, hosted by Leiden University in September 2003. Appropriate to the setting, it was a tribute to Joseph Justus Scaliger (1540-1609), the scholar who, in effect, made the reputation of the then young Leiden University (founded 1575), where he taught for the last 16 years of his life (1593-1609). It focused on the work of another Leiden notable, Professor J J L Duyvendak (1889-1954) and his magnum opus, a study and translation of the then little studied Book of Lord Shang (Chicago 1928),
The lecture was the first public introduction of the BIRD stylistic text, though presented in a different numerical format than the one currently used. It sought to examine some of Duyvendak's suggestions about subgroups of chapters within the Book of Lord Shang.
The lecture is divided into 9 sections, each linked to the next by arrows. There were 4 handouts.
- 1. Philology
- 2. The Shang-jywn Shu
- 3. Shvn Dau and the Rabbit
- 4. The First Four Duyvendak Layers
- 5. The SJS Military Group
- 6. What Do We Learn From This View of SJS?
- 7. Human Nature in Statecraft Theory
- 8. Han Feidz and the Vermin
- 9. Envoi
A lively question period followed, of which no transcription is available.
For the current form of the BIRD stylistic test, see the Style section and references there.
