American Sinology
Cuiling Zhang has asked about American Sinology. As peliminary to a discussion between the present writer (B) and Cuiling (C), here is a sketch of the background of Amercan Sinology, as one aspect of Western Sinology, some parts of which may not be familiar to readers in China. Note that "Sinology" here means the study of classical China. As will appear, there has developed a certain tension between that traditional approach and some more recent ones.
