Junior Sinologues
Cambridge 1948Photo courtesy EACS
The series of Junior Sinologues meetings got off to a modest but solid start in Cambridge on 6 January 1948, with both English and Continental scholars in attendance. In addition to the Juniors proper, a few more established figures also attended, and gave papers. The eighteen Juniors are shown above. The official roster (which, on later testimony, is here amended at one point) was:
Hans Bielenstein (Stockholm)
Eric B Ceadel (Cambridge)
W A C H Dobson (Oxford)
Jacques Gernet (Paris)
David Hawkes (Oxford)
Anthony F P Hulsewé (Leiden)
Jan Willem de Jong (Paris)
Robert Paul Kramers (Leiden)
Henriette Renée (Mrs Robert) Kramers
Minnie C van der Loon
Piet van der Loon (Cambridge)
J de Morpurgo (Cambridge)
Edwin G Pulleyblank (London)
Kenneth G Robinson (Oxford)
Peter Swann (Leiden)
Greta Scott (Cambridge)
Tjan Tjoe Som (Leiden)
Helen Wink (Leiden; not pictured)
Hope M Wright (London)The senior scholars were Homer H Dubs (Oxford), Gustav Haloun (Cambridge), Walter Simon (London), and Arthur Waley, none of whom are pictured here.
Testimony about the identity of those pictured has been provided by David Helliwell and David Hawkes, the latter of course a participant himself, and confirmed by several others. Helen Wink, listed on the roster, was not in the official picture; Mrs Kramers, who was in the picture, was not on the official roster. The individuals in question may be viewed closer up, in enlarged segments of the above group photograph, either by clicking on that name in the list above, or by following the arrow below to scan the entire group:
