Early Incendiary Warfare
Panel: The Escalation of Warfare in Early China
New England AAS Meeting, Colby College, 26 October 2002

Abstract

Vestiges in the historical writings and more extensive passages in the Sun-tzu Ping-fa, Ssu-ma Fa, Sun Pin Ping-fa, and Liu-t'ao, as well as the Shang-chün-shu and the Mo-tzu, indicate that incendiary warfare became a standard tactical option entailing well developed methods and techniques during the Warring States period. Their early evolution and impact are examined within a broader technical and historical context.
