Charles Spearman

Spearman is typical of many contributors to statistics, in that he was not primarily a statistician, but an expert in a field making use of statistics, in his case psychology.

Spearman spent a quarter of his life in the British army, receiving several decorations for bravery. The air of command which this experience gave him is evident in all extant photographs. While serving in Burma,
