The Human Nature Argument in the Lw-shr Chun/Chyou
Panel: Converging Toward Empire
AAS Convention, New York City, 27 March 2003Abstract This paper examines the discussions of human nature and related issues in LSC 1-12 against the background of the earlier conflict between the Mencian and Sywndzian points of view. It argues that LSC implicitly recasts what was in fact a disagreement over fundamentals as a simple difference of emphasis. Developing this conclusion will support and add detail to the view that LSC was designed in part to reconcile the competing philosophies of the Warring States period. The argument draws both on general points of agreement and disagreement, and on what may be specific responses to one or both Confucian points of view.
