Abstract

Post-Jou warfare, as known from the Chun/Chyou chronicle, was elite in nature, and territorial rather than symbolic in intent. Diplomacy functioned at first as a preventive of war, and a means of coordinating collective security actions. These actions were always in conflict with the more local aspirations of the individual states, and as armies became larger, the logic of conquest, unhindered by a need for alliances, increasingly determined state policies.
