Abstract

A new reconstruction of the Mician military writings permits a clearer view of the 04th century process of mutual escalation in the attack and defense of cities, and explains the stalemate in siegecraft which is reflected in the later chapters of the Sundz. The rise of defensive war as a separate art can be seen as a response to the challenge which the new mass army presented to the walled city.
