A Family Album

These sketches were begun long ago, to preserve some pieces of family history, and to correct some details of family memory. Only a few were completed, and those are available here, together with a few fragments. Life itself is fragmentary, and so, it turns out, is history.

The family on both sides came mostly from England and Ireland; many reached America from Canada. They wound up in various places: in the East, where the family teaching tradition expressed itself in various ways; in the Ohio country, where in pioneer days a spirit of mutual reliance developed, and where a certain something still lingers; and in the West, where the watchword was self-reliance, and much inventiveness was shown in keeping things going despite changing times.
